First Quarter Units
rd Grade: We will be learning to use our voices well with songs and games in class. We will also learn about different pitched and unpitched percussion instruments and how to play them correctly. Rhythms and pitch names will be reviewed and reinforced.
th Grade: We will work on distinguishing between rhythm and beat in music with songs and games. Students will review and play percussion instruments to reinforce rhythm early on. After building up knowledge of advanced rhythms, students will begin a rhythm board game in class to assess progress.
th Grade: We will use the first month of this quarter reviewing rhythms and pitches on the treble clef staff. Pitched percussion will be used to help students learn to play and sight-read melodies. At the end of September, students will begin transferring these skills to their recorders as we begin this together in class.
th Grade: We begin by introducing different styles and forms of music, including Big Band, Samba, and Patriotic Marches. Through these pieces, we review basic music theory and technique, after which we transition to reading sheet music.
th Grade: We begin with a review of form, instruments, and dynamics through pop music and musical theatre songs. Students have the opportunity to create their own songs and song lyrics. These skills are then applied to upcoming concert selections.
th Grade: Students review basic beat patterns and rhythms, then create their own rhythmic patterns and cues to teach the class. Our rhythms are then performed through body percussion and instruments.
